Keep the day job, Bishop!

Bishop and Dangermouse character

4th DECEMBER – Jean-Paul Satire (the-jangles@webtribe.net) writes to tell us: The bishops of the Church of Ireland continue to hold great fascination for many, especially the recent appointment to the See of Cork. How does Paul Colton manage to hold episcopal position along with his job as Dangermouse's faithful assistant, Penfold?

Lincoln leads the way

2nd DECEMBER – Top marks to Lincoln Cathedral for leading the way in hailing the new millennium. Their festival in July and August, with the heroic title, "Into the Light – 2000", set a fine example for other cathedrals to follow.

In the centre of the nave was a one-quarter size scale model of a Lancaster bomber suspended from the ceiling in commemoration of the Dam Busters. One of the arches held a 20ft wide tribute to Margaret Thatcher, which included a display celebrating her victories over the miners and the Argentinians in the Falklands War. A tribute to another Lincolnshire lady, Dame Judy Dench, focused on the film, "Tea with Mussolini", complete with a photograph of Il Duce himself. Another inspiring display was a memorial to an 18th-century public hangman.

The festival was apparently a great success... for the cathedral coffers. The building was packed with visitors of many nationalities and faiths, who paid to enter this great house of worship. Thanks to Brian Cranwell for alerting us to this splendid initiative.
